about me

I currently live on San Pedro St. in Skid Row in a small loft with many plants. I moved here in 2010, but my connection to Downtown Los Angeles is by way of working in the Garment Industry for the last 15 years, which is centered in the Fashion District, just a few blocks south.

Upon moving here, I immediately noticed a lack of trees. I felt physically compelled to plant something in front of my building.  This urge has taken me down a path of discovery about how trees and politics collide in Skid Row. Los Angeles is such a large city, that each district must create public-private partnerships if their respective trees are to thrive and be cared for.

Now that I live here, I can’t imagine living anywhere else.  I find this place to be rich in compassion, history and optimism. I look forward to becoming increasingly involved in my community and the revitalization of Downtown Los Angeles-specifically within Skid Row’s 50 blocks as defined by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, as the space between Main & Alameda and 3rd & 7th.

In 2013, along with Hal McMath, Tucker Herbert, Gabrielle Newmark and special help from Brian Dolansky I started Industrial District Green, a 501(c)3 organization which has as it’s mission:

To improve the livability of the Industrial District of downtown Los Angeles through comprehensive planning, implementation and maintenance of community-based greening and streetscape improvement projects.

In 2013, I served as the Public Chair of the Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council Parks and Open Space Committee.

    Hey Katherine,

I would like to contribute to your Operation Facelift project by purchasing some garbage cans or whatever else you need. Please let me know when and where to deliver.

I’m a producer with KCRW who wants to do a story, or stories, following up on Skid Row cleanup. Could we talk when convenient? Contact email below. Thanks, Saul Gonzalez
