Skid Row, Downtown Los Angeles. Decades of dysfunction known as “containment”.  Not a reference to those living on the streets, but a reference to the L.A.P.D., City government, County government, State government, Federal government,  large missions, dozens of non-profits, social service providers, people coming in from the outside to help for a couple hours – a discordant symphony of thousands of helpers and tens of millions of dollars.
All that will change because a few hundred people danced on Skid Row’s “Ground Zero” while singing Bob Marley’s “One Love” underneath the new signage for the Midnight Mission.  Well, perhaps not.  But ya gotta start somewhere.

 Working with the Lamp Community and seeing San Julian between 6th and 7th as a community magnet, the organizers of the “Love Mob” began to get permission from those along San Julian to hold a “block of love party” and found an enthusiastic partner in the Midnight Mission, who recently dramatically changed their signage as they prepare for their 100th anniversary next year.

Instead of free food along San Julian it was free hugs as organizers encouraged dancers, singers, huggers to arrive early to drop off cold weather clothing donations at the mission…all in the spirit of Bob Marley.
One Love!
One Heart!
Let’s get together and feel all right.
Hear the children cryin’
(One Love! );
Hear the children cryin’
(One Heart! ),
Sayin’: give thanks and praise
To the Lord and I will feel all right;
Sayin’: let’s get together
And feel all right.
Wo wo-wo wo-wo!
