cutting concrete can only mean one thing here…

This is Omar St.- short and sweet. I love this street. Newly cut concrete wells will soon have trees!

More trees for “Skidrokyo” coming very soon! A while back I gathered some folks from this neighborhood to walk around and consider places that new trees could go. Today, the concrete cutting began, and soon there will be a tree-planting event with the public invited to stop by and help plant a tree or just to watch. For sure we will be getting some Cherry Blossom trees in here, and another variety not yet picked out.

There are a few dead trees in this area, and with the help of the LA Conservation Corp, we are removing them to be replaced by new trees.

I want to thank the management of the Medical Building @ 3rd & San Pedro St. and  the Escondite for their  their vision of more trees for the ‘hood.

Obviously, trees are an obsession of mine for the Industrial district aka Skid Row, but I get super excited over the actual cutting of concrete– it may be my favorite part of the tree -planting process. It signifies confidence in the future and neighborhood bonds being forged, but it is a time filled with anxious anticipation, because the trees are not yet in place, and the final touches of the process are not yet complete.

Industrial District Green is the name of the non-profit organization I am in the middle of staring up so that more of this kind of thing can happen for this part of downtown. Some of those who I have gotten to know recently through this, my blog, or various other local projects, know about my plans because it’s all I generally talk about these days. Industrial District Green’s new Board members are helping make this project a reality.

  1. I love that you’re putting your non-profit in this context.  I love the word skidrokyo because it presents the reality of the two communities overlapping in a fun way.
